Welcome to my Home Page

I am a Lead Technical Architect in the IT Strategy and Architecture Group in Marks and Spencer, based in London, United Kingdom.

I manage a team of Technical Architects who are accountable for Application Services, which includes Application Hosting (.NET and latterly J2EE), Relational Database platforms, Data Warehouse and Business Information, Application Integration, and Non-Production Environments. As well as taking overall accountability for the Application Services vision, I am personally responsible for the Integration portfolio, which includes stateless messaging, bulk file transfer, web services and process orchestration.

I am also a published author and speaker, with a particular interest in the role and practice of software architecture.

I am a CEng (Chartered Engineer) and FBCS (Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society).

My Background

I have worked in IT since 1979. Prior to joining M&S, I was an IT consultant for employers including The French Thornton Partnership, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Sybase Professional Services, Praxis and Logica. Over the years I have taken senior roles on projects for a wide range of public and private sector clients.

I now work for the UK's leading retailer, Marks and Spencer, leading a team responsible for the Application Services portfolio. As well as owning the strategy and vision for this domain, my team and I provide technology leadership and governance to a wide range of programmes within M&S, and in some cases work full- or part-time within large systems implementation projects.

You can find out more about me, as well as gaining access to some of my published writing and software, by clicking one of the links to the left of this page.

News

  • I have been awarded Chartered IT Professional status by the British Computer Society, and Chartered Engineer status by the Engineering Council UK.

  • Software Systems Architecture : Working With Stakeholders Using Viewpoints and Perspectives I have written an architecture book, Software Systems Architecture : Working With Stakeholders Using Viewpoints and Perspectives, with Eoin Woods. It was published in April 2005 and is in its second reprint. It has recently been translated into Korean!

  • Eoin and I have set up a website for the book, which includes sample chapters, a directory of web resources, a comprehensive bibliography, and reference material on architectural viewpoints and perspectives.

  • I have recently moved my website to a new URL because of the appalling performance of my old service provider NetIdentity. All of the content on my old site has been reproduced here.

  • You can find links to some white papers I have written here.

  • I have written some (award-winning) free software (published under the GPL) which you can find here.
