Background and Experience
I worked as an IT consultant for twenty years after graduation, for a number of large and small systems integrators,
as a developer, project manager, technical consultant and software architect.
Over that time I have taken senior roles on projects for a wide range of public and private sector clients.
In 2004 I moved into permanent employment with
Marks and Spencer where I am Lead Technical Architect
in the IT Strategy and Architecture Group (see below).
I combine strong architecture, technical leadership and analysis and design skills with a technology background that includes enterprise application integration, package implementation, relational databases, and object-oriented software development. I work with both business and technology stakeholders at all levels, to create the architectural vision and strategy, ratify it with the stakeholders, and provide technology leadership, governance and support to programmes and projects across the IT Group. I have co-authored a book, Software Systems Architecture, which was published in 2005 by Addison-Wesley. It is a practitioner-oriented guide to designing and implementing effective architectures for information systems. You can find out more about the book here. I am an experienced technical instructor and internal project auditor. I have also been involved in business development, particularly proposal-writing and pre- and post-sales activity. I am a CEng (Chartered Engineer) and FBCS (Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society). Fellow is the BCS's most senior grade and is awarded to those who hold a senior IT position or have an established reputation of eminence or authority in the field of IT. Current RoleI am a Lead Technical Architect in the IT Strategy and Architecture Group in Marks and Spencer, based in London, United Kingdom. I manage a team of Technical Architects who are accountable for Application Services, which includes Application Hosting (.NET and latterly J2EE), Relational Database platforms, Data Warehouse and Business Information, Application Integration, and Non-Production Environments. Our remit is as follows:
As well as taking overall accountability for the Application Services vision, I am personally responsible for the Integration portfolio, which includes stateless messaging, bulk file transfer, web services and process orchestration. I am working with two colleagues to define the Enterprise Technology Architecture for Marks and Spencer. I have line management responsibility (planning, demand management and performance review) over a team which ranges in experience from seasoned architects near retirement to someone for whom this is his first architecture role. We operate a "buddy architect" system at M&S whereby each of us has a buddy who can cover our portfolio if we are absent. I am the buddy architect for IT Service Continuity and for RFID.
